Six Hot Topics in Hospitality Right Now

Hello, Weekly ON readers! 😄 Today we've rounded up six critical issues no hospitality professional should overlook.

  1. Sprinkler Installation Data Goes Public

Following a series of fires in accommodation facilities, fire prevention has become a major concern. Korea's National Fire Agency is publicly disclosing sprinkler installation data to encourage voluntary compliance.

The government is promoting transparency around sprinkler systems in facilities that haven't installed them, giving consumers the information they need to make safety-conscious choices. Online platforms will now display sprinkler installation status.

This regulatory tightening means additional costs for accommodation operators — which highlights the need for government support programs.

  1. Mandatory 'Barrier-Free Kiosks' Coming Soon

Barrier-free kiosks are designed for people with disabilities, seniors, children, and others who may struggle with standard self-service machines. As contactless service expands, these devices aim to close the digital accessibility gap. The intent is good — but the cost is real.

Many property owners who've already installed kiosks lack the budget to retrofit them with barrier-free software. New installations are expensive too. To ease the burden, the government is covering 70–80% of barrier-free kiosk costs for small businesses — but many operators still aren't aware of the program.

Pension Bookings Soar During Summer Vacation Season

👉[Full Story]

According to Consumer Insight's 'Domestic & International Travel Trends Analysis for August', pension bookings — which had been falling since August 2023 — rebounded sharply this summer.

August domestic accommodation share: hotels (27.9%), pensions (22.0%), motels/inns (10%), condos (9%), camping (4.9%). Pension share jumped from 17.6% in July to 22% in August — higher than August 2023 (20.9%).

Why the pension comeback? ▲ Rising hotel prices driven by inbound tourism recovery ▲ More travelers bringing pets ▲ Record heat fueling demand for pool villas. ONDA's data shows bookings for luxury pensions and pool villas (₩600,000+) rose 52.3% YoY during this summer's peak season.

However, intent to travel domestically in the next three months dropped 5%p from July. The prolonged economic downturn is suppressing overall travel demand. With price cited as the top factor in accommodation choice, properties need to nail the balance between quality and competitive pricing.

1️⃣ Cancellation Policy Update 👉[Full Story]

TL;DR: Free cancellation window shifts from "same day" to "within 24 hours of booking"

The story: Korea's Fair Trade Commission has announced revised dispute resolution standards clarifying when consumers can cancel accommodation bookings without penalty. These standards serve as the baseline for mediation and recommendations in consumer disputes.

What's changing? The no-penalty cancellation window shifts from "the day of booking" to "within 24 hours of booking." If the 24-hour window overlaps with check-in day, the cutoff becomes "midnight before check-in."

2️⃣ Summer Vacation Satisfaction 👉[Full Story]

TL;DR: Gangwon-do tops summer satisfaction rankings; Jeju drops to 7th

The story: A survey of domestic summer vacation satisfaction shows Gangwon-do taking first place for the first time. Jeju fell three spots for the second year running, landing at 7th. Daejeon entered the top 10 for the first time.

Why? Jeju ranked 3rd for destination appeal but scored poorly on travel environment (costs, service quality). Daejeon's rise is driven by the Seongsimdang bakery pilgrimage phenomenon — it's become the "bread mecca" for travelers.

3️⃣ Travel Account Deficit 👉[Full Story]

TL;DR: August travel deficit persists — up 27% vs. 2019 despite inbound recovery

The story: Inbound arrivals in August recovered to 98.5% of 2019 levels. But the travel account deficit is actually 27% larger. H1 2024 recorded the worst deficit since 2018.

Why? Record yen weakness has turbocharged Korean outbound travel to Japan. Meanwhile, Chinese tourists — once a group travel mainstay — are now traveling independently and spending less per capita.

4️⃣ D2C Channel Growth 👉[Full Story]

TL;DR: Travel companies betting big on D2C (direct-to-consumer) channels

The story: Direct channels like KakaoTalk reservations, Google Hotels, and official websites are gaining traction. Hotels are sweetening D2C-only deals with perks like discounts, free breakfast, and late checkout.

Why? D2C cuts ad spend and OTA commissions while giving operators access to customer data — enabling personalized marketing that was previously out of reach.

5️⃣ Hospitality Robots 👉[Full Story]

TL;DR: Hospitality robot sales up 31% YoY

The story: The hospitality industry's interest in robotics is surging. 2023 hospitality robot sales jumped 31% YoY, accounting for roughly 20% of global service robot sales.

What's next? The sector is evolving beyond simple wayfinding and info kiosks. Robots that prepare food and beverages — performing specialized hospitality tasks — are starting to appear on the market.
